"The rate at which babies have been born with a drug withdrawal syndrome that can occur because they were exposed to prescription painkillers or heroin in the womb has quadrupled over the course of 15 years in the U.S., according to figures released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Incidence rates of the condition, called neonatal abstinence syndrome, were highest of late among infants born in Maine, Vermont and West Virginia, where they exceeded 30 per 1,000 births. Rates were lowest in Hawaii and South Dakota."
